Two Classic Tractors: Bolinder-Munktell 470 vs Massey Ferguson 135

When it comes to classic tractors, everyone has their favourite! Some prefer the bigger, more powerful machines, while others love the smaller tractors that have become part of farming history.

This month, we’re looking at two interesting tractors from the 1960s: the Bolinder-Munktell 470 and the Massey Ferguson 135.

Both are loved by vintage tractor enthusiasts, but they’re very different machines.

Bolinder-Munktell 470 – The Swedish Powerhouse

The Bolinder-Munktell 470, also known as the Bison, was produced in Sweden between 1959 and 1966.

Powered by a 5.04-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing around 73 horsepower, the BM 470 was a powerful machine for its time.

With its distinctive red bodywork, large engine and sturdy design, the Bison was built for demanding agricultural work. It was even used as the basis for industrial and forestry machinery.

Today, the BM 470 is an interesting piece of Swedish engineering history and certainly stands out at vintage tractor shows.

Massey Ferguson 135 – A Farming Favourite

First introduced in 1964, the Massey Ferguson 135 quickly became one of the most recognisable tractors in British farming.

Common diesel versions were powered by a 2.5-litre three-cylinder Perkins engine producing around 45–47 horsepower.

The 135 became popular thanks to its simple design, reliability and versatility. From smaller farms to everyday jobs around the yard, it was a tractor that could turn its hand to plenty of tasks.

Even today, you’ll still find Massey Ferguson 135 tractors being used, restored and proudly displayed at agricultural shows.

So, How Do They Compare?

Although both tractors came from a similar era, they were designed for different types of work.

The Bolinder-Munktell 470 offered more horsepower and a much larger engine, making it suitable for heavier jobs.

The Massey Ferguson 135, on the other hand, was smaller, lighter and easier to manoeuvre, making it a practical all-rounder for everyday farm work.

Both tractors have their own strengths, and that’s what makes comparing classic machinery so interesting!

Importance of Quality Diesel Fuel Injectors

Using high-quality diesel fuel injectors is crucial for maintaining optimal engine performance and reliability. Low-quality or counterfeit diesel fuel injectors can lead to poor fuel atomisation, increased wear and tear on the engine, and potential damage. Investing in genuine or reputable diesel fuel injectors ensures long-lasting performance and minimises the risk of engine problems.

Diesel fuel injectors are vital for the proper functioning of diesel engines. They ensure precise fuel delivery, combustion efficiency, and overall performance. Regular fuel injection service and proper diagnosis of diesel fuel injectors are essential for maintaining their performance.

Choosing high-quality fuel injectors also plays a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and reliability of your diesel engine.
