This clever dual-fuel approach kept running costs low without sacrificing power.

Under the bonnet sat a robust two-cylinder horizontal engine, famed for its slow but steady “putt-putt” rhythm and its ability to pull through heavy work. The later Model N could deliver roughly 12 horsepower at the drawbar and about 25 horsepower at the belt pulley, ample for pulling a three-furrow plough or driving stationary equipment such as a thresher.
Steel wheels fitted with spade lugs gave the tractor bite in soft earth, while the belt pulley allowed farmers to harness engine power for a variety of tasks beyond ploughing.
The Birth of a Giant
The Waterloo Boy’s reputation for reliability and ruggedness soon caught the eye of John Deere, which purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918. Deere’s first tractors carried the Waterloo Boy name, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s best-known tractor brands.

Today, surviving Waterloo Boy tractors are treasured by collectors and vintage machinery enthusiasts. Their clattering engines and simple controls evoke a time when mechanisation was still a bold experiment—and when a clever use of kerosene and petrol helped farmers embrace a new era of productivity.
